Occupy Moncton: direct democracy in our province

occupymoncton

occupymonctonOn Saturday, October 15th, Occupy Moncton joined the 99% movement that is spreading throughout North America and around the globe. On that day, hundreds of citizens occupied the grounds of Moncton City Hall to demonstrate in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street.

The group is now announcing its intention to peacefully occupy public space, exercising direct democracy through the formation of a Moncton General Assembly and educating the citizenry about the record disparity in income between Canada’s richest 1% and the remaining 99%. The members of the Moncton General Assembly have indicated they intend hold weekly demonstrations in front of Moncton City Hall every Saturday, at 11 am at which time further actions will be agreed upon by consensus of the General Assembly.

“In the next few weeks, we will coordinate our actions with the other Occupy protests in this province, notably Occupy Fredericton and Occupy Saint-John,” said Katia McEvoy, one of Occupy Moncton’s facilitator. “Together, we will deliver a clear list of demands to our provincial and federal government with the goal of empowering the citizenry”.

All decisions made by Occupy Moncton will be made in a democratic manner, in a horizontal, non-hierarchical process using the examples set by Occupy Wall Street.

The Moncton group is urging all southeastern New Brunswick residents to join the assemblies every Saturday to make their voice heard. We invite you to come and bring your family, make signs and help, or join those who are already occupying.

The group is also organizing entertainment and food to be available at General Assemblies and occupations and is open to receiving donations from the general public who might support their cause.

———-
