Help UNB students get to Honduras

by Amelia Secord

Reading Time: 1min read

Students from the University of New Brunswick’s Leadership Team, along with Global Brigades Canada are planning a trip of a lifetime to Honduras this coming May. Twenty-five students are going to the region of Tegucigalpa in order to provide free health and dental care to Honduras citizens.

Currently, Honduras’ health care is accessible mainly in urban areas and does not come free. A night in a hospital can run you thirty to forty dollars, which is costly for most Hondurans who work in agriculture. Citizens will travel miles to receive basic health care.

UNB students will be assisting doctors and dentists examine and treat patients. Students will also be setting up a full pharmacy complete with vitamins and medications in order to properly treat patients. Along with shadowing professionals, students will have hands on experience and a first hand look at Honduras’ economics and health care system.

Students are currently fundraising for the trip and are looking for both monetary and hygienic items. A basket is also going to be raffled at the upcoming Mark Jeffery Scholarship hockey game on February 2nd. The basket includes gift certificates to Made You Blush, Blonde Inc., 8 playoff games, Jack’s Pizza, Victory Meat Market, Tony’s Music Box, Laura Secord Chocolates, 10 hot yoga sessions at Dynamic Fitness, and much more! Tickets will be selling 1 for $3 and 3 for $5. Come out and enjoy a hockey game and support a great cause!
