St. Thomas University students and allies rally in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en

St. Thomas University students in Fredericton organized a rally on Feb. 27 to stand in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en, and demand action from the University. About 40 students and allies joined the rally at the start of a snowstorm.

Wet’suwet’en land defenders are protecting their land from the Coastal GasLink project which is proposed to run through their traditional, unceded territory.

The Coastal GasLink project is owned by TransCanada Energy – a company which STU funds and profits from every year.

The goal of the rally and demonstration was to request a public statement of solidarity from St. Thomas University.

Solidarity from the University requires a commitment to divest its endowment from TransCanada Energy and all other fossil fuel companies, which threaten Indigenous land rights and reconciliation, as well as environmental and social justice.

Hannah Moore is a fourth year Environment & Society major at St. Thomas University and the leader of the STU divestment campaign.
