Feminist Lunch Series: Dr. Julia Torrie on “Sinews” of Nazi Empire: German female military auxiliaries in World War Two Europe
Please mark your calendars for the second talk of our Winter 2024 Feminist Lunch Series to be given on Friday, Mar. 22 at 12:00pm in Tilley Hall, Room 28, on UNB Campus in Fredericton by Dr. Julia Torrie (STU History).
The talk is titled: ““Sinews” of Nazi Empire: German female military auxiliaries in World War Two Europe.”
During the Second World War, Nazi Germany employed as many as 500,000 female military auxiliaries. These women were deployed not only in Germany itself, but in occupied territories Europe-wide. Working as telephonists, clerks and secretaries, they undertook essential administration duties and assured communications between the homeland and occupied areas. Informed both by the historical scholarship of empire and that of the Third Reich, this talk will examine the essential and ambiguous roles women played as “sinews” binding together the Nazis’ wartime continental empire.
Dr. Julia Torrie is a Professor of History at St. Thomas University. Trained as a German historian, she focuses on Franco-German, European and global interactions. She is curious about questions of equality and inequality, resource access, and the interplay of powerful and less powerful actors within constraining structures like authoritarian regimes and empires. Torrie has published two books and a co-edited volume on Germany, France and Europe in the Second World War, as well as articles and book chapters on themes ranging from tourism to visual and food history. Her two current research projects address on the one hand, German women’s war experiences during the Second World War, and on the other hand, the history of food and empire.
