Dunn 106, Mount Allison University Campus

The Department of Politics and International Relations, and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Mount Allison University are sponsoring a film screening of Naila and the Uprising, a 2017 documentary by award-winning Brazilian director Julia Bacha and Palestinian producer Rula Salameh. Through the story of Naila, a Palestinian activist from Gaza, the documentary tells how Palestinian women sustained the historical Palestinian uprising, the first Intifada. Women created a parallel structure that kept the uprising going for five years while bringing world attention and recognition to the Palestinian right to self-determination. While women played the most important role during the Intifada, they were pushed aside, and excluded from decision-making in the post-uprising. This film tells this inspiring story of these women who continue to inspire future generations of women and girls as they pursue the struggle against occupation, settler colonialism, and the apartheid regime.
