NB ACORN RALLIES AGAINST ENERGY POVERTY IN FREDERICTON
On April 1st, NB ACORN is holding events in Moncton and Fredericton to fight the 9% rate hike taking effect that day and demand action on skyrocketing energy rates and energy poverty in New Brunswick. With rates increasing 20% in the past year, wages stagnating, and economic instability growing, more residents are being forced to choose between rent, food, or keeping the lights on.

“New Brunswick has the worst energy poverty levels in Canada—double the national average. NB Power and the government say the issue is complex, but everyday people know the real problem: the bills are too high! A public consultations on NB Power’s future begin, ACORN will fight to ensure that low- andmoderate-income ratepayers are prioritized. We need real solutions, not skyrocketing bills!”– Nichola Taylor, NB ACORN ChairAccording to the Saint John Human development Council, 81% of low-income households in New Brunswick have energy bills they cannot afford. Nearly 13% of accounts are in arrears, with 1% leading to power shutoffs. Meanwhile, NB Power focuses on paying off its own debt from pastmismanagement—at the expense of struggling ratepayers. Taylor added, “New Brunswick cannot afford short-sighted solutions like pipelines and increased reliance on fossil fuels. NB ACORN is demanding real investment in renewable energy, energy rebates, and protections forlow-income ratepayers.”
