Fredericton ACORN launching Healthy and Affordable Homes platform
On April 21st at 12 noon, Fredericton ACORN will rally outside Fredericton City Hall, bringing
forward their Healthy and Affordable Homes municipal platform.
What: ACORN Healthy Affordable Homes Platform Launch
When: April 21st at 12 noon
Where: Fredericton City Hall, 397 Queen Street
ACORN membership is strong in Fredericton, and with it we are looking to empower
counsellors and current candidates to ensure they are putting person-first policies around
housing as we head into a Municipal Election. Mayoral Candidate Jenica Atwin stated she
will be in attendance at this event.
At the rally, ACORN will be focussed on key planks of its Healthy Affordable Homes platform.
ACORN calls for a landlord registration program—which will enable city bylaw officers to
proactively enforce provincial occupancy code standards.
Currently, many Frederictonians feel trapped in their apartments, living in horrible conditions.
Many live with maintenance issues that take months for landlords to repair, unexpected
guests like mice, cockroaches and bedbugs, and mold that endangers the health of tenants
and their families.
Many people ask why tenants don’t file complaints to fix these problems. The reality is that
many are too scared to lose their only chance for stable living.
Because of this, many neglectful landlords go unreported and unpunished, selling
sub-standard living at exorbitant rates. When affordable housing is rare, people put up with
the worst to have a roof over their heads.
The Healthy Affordable Homes Platform will tackle this dilemma at the source, before the
problem starts. On one hand providing deeply affordable housing for those in core housing
need, on the other, making sure landlords keep the already available housing safe and
livable.
ACORN members who are facing apartment issues will be in attendance for comment.
