PHOTOJOURNALISM FROM THE GAZA STRIP: POP-UP EXHIBIT IN MONCTON

Over the past three years, Palestinian photojournalist Rizek Abdel Jawad has been documenting life in the shadow of the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip, which has claimed the lives of more than 74,000 people, almost one third of them children. On paper, a ceasefire has been in effect for one year, but the death toll continues to mount.

For Rizek — who lives in a displacement camp with his wife and three young children — the act of bearing witness to this destruction has come with great personal risk: about 200 journalists and media workers have been killed in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 2023, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

During this time, Rizek has been in regular communication with friends in New Brunswick, and he has frequently contributed his photo essays to the NB Media Co-op.

To highlight the ongoing suffering and the need for international solidarity with the Palestinian people, Citizens for Peace-Greater Moncton and the NB Media Co-op will be hosting a pop-up exhibition of Rizek’s photography on Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., outside Central United Church, 150 Queen Street, Moncton. Speakers will add personal testimonies between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

In case of bad weather, the exhibition will take place on Oct. 28, at the same time and location. The photos will be displayed near the Peace Garden, on the Church Street side of the building. There is no admission fee but donations for Rizek’s family will be accepted.
