Shelagh Rogers: Nicholas Lecture on Indigenous issues
Shelagh Rogers will deliver this year’s Nicholas Lecture on Indigenous Issues on Tuesday, October 27.
About Shelagh Rogers
Shelagh Rogers is Red River Métis and a citizen of the Manitoba Métis Federation. Her great-grandmother Edith was the first Métis woman and the first woman to be elected to the Manitoba Legislature. To meet her Métis family and to walk in the land of her ancestors, Shelagh moved from Victoria BC and now very happily lives in Winnipeg.
Shelagh is a veteran broadcast-journalist, and most recently, she was host and co-creator of CBC Radio’s The Next Chapter. Shelagh co-edited and contributed to the three volume “Speaking My Truth” series about residential school, healing and reconciliation published by the Aboriginal Healing Foundation.
In 2011, she was inducted as an Honorary Witness for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a life-changing honour. She has since focussed on amplifying Indigenous voices, Indigenous narratives and the truth of Canada’s history. She was the 2014 Jack Matthews Fellow at Trent University and in 2016 was named the inaugural recipient of the Margaret Trudeau Award for Mental Health Advocacy for speaking openly about her own depression and the issue of accessibility for mental health care.
Shelagh has been recognized with honorary doctorates from eight Canadian universities, and served as Chancellor of the University of Victoria from 2015 to 2021. Currently, she is the 16th Chancellor of Queen’s University, succeeding her cousin, the Honourable Murray Sinclair-iban. She is also the host and co-producer of the podcast Words and Culture: The Michif (Métis) Episodes, and interviewer for The Nation Builders, a series produced by Indigenous Geographic. Shelagh chairs the advisory board for the Canadian Institute of Substance Use Research (CISUR) at UVic. She helped her youngest brother quit alcohol. He hasn’t had a drink for 19 years. If you were to ask Shelagh what is she most proud of, she would say she is proudest of her brother.
