EVENT OVERVIEW
Gold continues to be one of the main metals mined in Canada and on the planet, with 90% of gold demand driven by the luxury market (e.g. jewellery), financial investment products, and central banks’ reserves. Despite some initial mine shutdowns and a sharp decline in the jewellery demand, the COVID-19 crisis has driven gold to the highest price in its history and seen an unprecedented increase in demand for gold investment products. Banks’ gold reserves are also reaching an all-time high. What’s driving this demand?
COVID-19 or not, this film screening of The Shadow of Gold and post-screening round table discussion attempts to better understand how gold is affecting your community, your environment, and what can be done about it?
Thank you! This event was made possible with support from Patagonia and The McLean Foundation. Thanks also to the following regional groups for their outreach support: Cinema Politica Fredericton, NB Media Co-op, Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network, and Solidarité Fredericton
