Policy 713 keeps queer and trans kids safe: protesters [video]

This edition of the show looks at controversy around Policy 713, a policy setting minimum requirements for school districts and public schools to create a safe and welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ people.

On June 8, the provincial government announced changes to the policy. The most significant change involved the requirement for teachers and staff to respect students’ correct names and pronouns. Under the revised policy, this requirement only applies to students 16 and over.

Host Tobin Haley discusses Policy 713 with Gail Costello, founder of Pride in Education and retired educator; Dr. Casey Burkholder, associate professor of education at UNB; and Amber Chisholm, the associate director of the Public Legal Education and Information Service of NB.

The NB debrief is a collaboration between the NB Media Co-op and CHCO TV.

A group of people gather outside a stone building for a rally supporting Policy 713, which protects LGBTQ2+ students in New Brunswick schools. Participants hold colorful signs and Pride flags, with messages such as “Queer and Trans Students Matter,” “Policy 713 is about respect,” and “Queer education is non-negotiable.” Many attendees wear masks, and one person in the foreground holds a Pride flag and a coffee cup.
