Alex Cosh, managing editor of The Maple will deliver the NB Media Co-op’s 17th annual keynote address entitled, Silencing Dissent on the Military-Industrial Complex, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at 7:00 PM AT on Zoom.

Canada is poised to hike military spending to an astonishing five per cent of national GDP at the behest of U.S. President Donald Trump. That amounts to around $150 billion annually. While this gargantuan increase will be a boon to arms manufacturers and military contractors, it is expected to put an enormous strain on public funds. Despite this, corporate media have offered little if any real critical reporting on the target. Meanwhile, both the Department of National Defence and industry groups appear to be working hard to ensure that no critical journalists can ask tough questions. What can independent media do about this?
