Tertulia – War in Ukraine: a panel on race, citizenship, refugees and realism [video]

Tertulias Fredericton presented a panel discussion about the war in Ukraine with Raluca Bejan, Rene Bogovic and Roger Boyd on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 by Zoom. The panel is now available for viewing here:

Bejan, Bogovic and Boyd discussed their perspectives on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and resulting refugee crisis, and challenged some of the prevalent discourse on the war and refugees.

Raluca Bejan is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Dalhousie University. From 2018 to 2019, Raluca was an Assistant Professor of Critical Social Policy in the School of Social Work at St. Thomas University. Raluca was a former Visiting Academic at the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at Oxford in 2016 and 2018. Bejan is the Book Review Editor for Refuge: Canada’s Journal on Refugees and is leading various research projects including the Refugee Integration in South East Europe (RISEE) and Temporary Foreign Workers in the Maritimes During COVID. In 2018, Bejan co-directed Trace, a documentary film on the Greek refugee crisis.

Rene Bogovic is a Sociology PhD candidate at the University of Toronto. His doctoral research explores the role of mother tongue and everyday language use in the (re)formation and negotiation of post-apartheid ethno-racial boundaries, with a focus on the multiracial Afrikaans speech community in Western Cape in South Africa. Bogovic is a team member of the Refugee Integration in South East Europe (RISEE) research project, focusing on the Western Balkan refugee route.

Roger Boyd is a Fellow at the Balsillie School of International Affairs and graduate of the Global Governance PhD program at the Balsillie School. His research is focused on the joint transitions of global power politics and the global energy system to low carbon sources, with specific focus on the interactions and dependencies of the two. He is author of Energy and the Financial System (Springer). Most recently, Boyd has completed a novel based on a future climate change driven crisis.
