To mark World Refugee Day, Tracy Glynn for the NB Media Co-o interviewed Ram Kharel, a Nepali man who had been living in a refugee camp in Bhutan before coming to Fredericton.
TG: How did you decide to come to Canada?
RK: We were told we would have equal rights if we moved to Canada, and we would no longer have to live in a refugee camp. We liked that proposal and decided to move to Canada. I accompanied my in-laws’ family. My parents and siblings are still in Nepal.
TG: What are your aspirations today?
RK: My wife and I only get $1,000 per month. She is 4 months pregnant so it is important that she eat healthy food. I am currently volunteering with the Canadian Diabetes Association and looking for work. Unfortunately, my math degree is not recognized in Canada. I hope to become a medical assistant and I have applied to the N.B. Community College. I am not sure how I’m going to pay for my education.
TG: What do you think about Fredericton?
RK: Canada is a very lovely place. In Bhutan, I was ostracized. The Multicultural Association of Fredericton and Jason, my employment counsellor, provide great support to me. I hope with some help from friends I can live a quality life in Canada. I also have knowledge, talents and experience to share with people here.
