Tertulias, Fredericton’s philosophy cafés, are back this fall online

St. Thomas University and University of New Brunswick professors have been delivering tertulias on big thinkers and artists — from Simone de Beauvoir to Rumi, Søren Kierkegaard to Sofia Kovalevskaya since 2018. Tertulias this fall will continue to feature riveting speakers on people who have inspired us and shaped our world.

Tertulia Fall 2020 Schedule

Sept. 23 -Tom Beckley on Wendell Berry

Oct 7 –  Amy Dryer on Frida Kahlo

Oct 21 – Vlad Tasić on Alain Badiou

Nov 4 – Karen Robert on Paulo Freire

Nov 25 – Margaret Kress on Winona LaDuke

What is a tertulia? A tertulia, of the Latin American and Iberian tradition, can be described as a literary and artistic social gathering or a philosophy café where people get together to talk about ideas. Tertulias take the big thinkers out of the classroom, the artists out the galleries –and into the community.

Tertulias combine words with music, poetry, readings, art and visuals. Tertulias take place every other Wednesday at 7:00pm. When COVID hit in New Brunswick, the tertulias moved from Milda’s Cafe to online by Zoom.

This fall’s tertulias are supported by the Tobique River Trading Company.

The NB Media Co-op has partnered with Tertulias Fredericton to make some of the tertulias available online.

Stay updated on Tertulia’s Facebook.
