POEM: SMR Sam

POEM: SMR Sam

Graphic by L. Wuest, inspired by Peter Nicholson's political cartoon in The Australian (4 June 2005) and by various ESCO sculptures.

SMR Sam is the man with the plan
a snake oil cure for the ills of the land
The boys at the ledg think he’s all just fab
the taxpaying public can pick up the tab

Shampoo the Candu with a clean green shower
money talks and Sam has the power
Split and Merge, for Sam no bother
Liberal, Conservative, all the same fodder

With gathering speed at the Point of Lepreau
the pressure mounts to keep temperatures low
like a steam engine barrelin’ down a highway of steal
hop on board for one helluva deal

At every stop you can hear the ovation
Plutonium Winter is the way of salvation
Each Tom Dick and Mary ready to buy
a ticket of escape to that nuclear sky

Stack those irradiated bundles higher and higher
dire green warnings, the work of a liar
Sam has the answer, it’s a damned sure delight,
that hole that they’re diggin’ for their nuclear shite

Lawrence Wuest is an ecologist living in the Upper Nashwaak on unceded territory of the Wəlastəkwiyik, Mi’kmaq, and Peskotomuhkati.
